Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek suffered a surprising defeat at the WTA Canadian Open as she fell 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 to Denmark's Clara Tauson in the fourth round. Swiatek, the second seed in Montreal, joined other top seeds like Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Mirra Andreeva in exiting the tournament early.
Playing her first event since winning Wimbledon, Swiatek seemed out of sync and struggled in crucial moments. Tauson took control of the first set tiebreak and secured the victory when Swiatek's backhand hit the net.
Tauson, who avenged her Wimbledon loss to Swiatek, described the win as "unreal."
"It's really great and it shows that all the hard work I've put in has paid off," she said. "I'm gaining more confidence at this level and starting to feel like I belong here. I think that really helped me today in the crucial points."
Tauson will now face Madison Keys, who saved two match points in her hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Karolina Muchova.
On the other hand, Naomi Osaka advanced to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since 2024 by defeating Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 6-0 in just 49 minutes. Working with former Swiatek coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, Osaka praised his direct coaching style.
In the men's event at the ATP National Bank Open in Toronto, Ben Shelton staged a remarkable comeback to beat 13th-seeded Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1) after trailing 2-4 in the deciding set.
Shelton acknowledged the tough match, saying, "I was down and almost out, being a break down in the third set. I gave myself a second chance and managed to turn things around. Coming through in the end speaks volumes about my mental toughness and ability to grind it out in those moments."
The 22-year-old Shelton, with 100 career match wins, will now face ninth-seeded Alex de Minaur, who defeated Frances Tiafoe.
With surprises unfolding and emerging talents making their mark, the Canadian Open continues to provide high drama on both the women's and men's sides of the draw.
