How to Maintain Electric Vehicles During Monsoon Season
Own an EV? Here’s how to keep it safe this monsoon: Tips & suggestions
How to keep your EVs safe this monsoon.
With the monsoon approaching many parts of India, electric vehicle owners have more to worry about than just potholes and traffic jams. In a country where EV adoption is on the rise, knowing how to maintain your EV during the monsoon months is increasingly important. Whether it's your daily commute or a weekend getaway, following a few precautions can help keep your electric scooter or car running safely and efficiently. Here are some crucial tips to keep your EV in top condition during the rainy season. One of the first things to check is the vehicle's electrical protection. While most EVs come with IP67-rated components, including the battery and connectors, it's essential to regularly inspect rubber seals on doors, windows, and charging ports. Water seepage can damage sensitive electronics, so it's best to be cautious. The battery is the heart of an electric vehicle and requires special attention during the rainy season. Make it a habit to check the battery area for any signs of corrosion or dampness. If you notice cracks in the casing or any moisture buildup, it's crucial to have it inspected at a service center promptly. Although batteries are well-sealed, wear and tear over time can make them vulnerable. Charging your EV during heavy rains also requires care. Ensure to only plug in your vehicle when the port is completely dry. It's advisable to charge indoors or under a shelter. If you have a home charging station, make sure it's well-insulated and shielded from rain. Using waterproof covers for charging cables and sockets adds an extra layer of protection. The underbody of your EV is exposed to harsh conditions during monsoon drives. Water, slush, and road salt can cause corrosion to metal parts over time. To prevent this, consider getting an anti-rust coating done at a service center. Regularly washing the underbody will also help remove debris and reduce long-term damage. Tire health is crucial in wet conditions. Worn-out treads can lead to slipping and poor grip, especially on muddy or waterlogged roads. Ensure your tires are properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth for better handling and braking. Damp interiors are another common issue. Using rubber or waterproof mats can prevent water from seeping into the carpet. After each ride, check for wet spots inside the cabin and promptly dry them to avoid unpleasant odors. Home electrical safety is also important. Ensure your charging socket is properly grounded. Unplug the charger during lightning storms and consider installing a safety switch to protect against voltage surges. Discover more about the automotive world at Times of India.

India to Make Two BIS-Certified Helmets Mandatory with Every New Two-Wheeler Sold
India to Make Two BIS-Certified Helmets Mandatory with Every New Two-Wheeler Sold
India is set to take a major step forward in two-wheeler safety. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recently proposed a change to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. This proposal will require manufacturers to provide two BIS-certified helmets - one for the rider and one for the pillion - with every new two-wheeler sold in the country starting January 2026. The objective is to promote safer riding habits and reduce road fatalities, especially among pillion riders who often do not wear helmets. Dealerships will also need to deliver both helmets at the time of vehicle handover. For an industry that has long struggled with poor safety awareness and widespread use of fake helmets, this new regulation could bring about much-needed change. According to Rajeev Kapur, Managing Director of Steelbird, this rule could lead to a significant increase in helmet demand. Kapur mentioned that if every new two-wheeler comes with two helmets, the annual requirement could exceed 4 crore helmets. However, a challenge lies ahead as India's actual production capacity for genuine ISI-certified helmets is only around 3 crore units per year, leaving a substantial gap. The proposed rule aligns with the government's broader efforts to reduce road fatalities, with over 1.5 lakh deaths reported annually in India due to road accidents, a significant portion of which involve two-wheeler riders. Steelbird, one of India's largest helmet manufacturers, is already heavily investing in automation and plant expansion. The company plans to introduce 75 new helmet models over the next five years, catering to various segments from budget to premium. Despite these positive steps, the issue of fake helmets remains a concern. Approximately half of the helmets used on Indian roads are counterfeit, lacking safety standards and providing inadequate protection. Kapur emphasized the importance of strong enforcement to ensure that only genuine ISI-marked products are sold and that any law mandating two helmets per vehicle must have robust checks in place. Kapur believes that effective enforcement of this law will not only save more lives but also help eliminate counterfeit helmet suppliers from the market.
