A Cinematic Exploration of Broadcaster Pankaj Saha's Life and Legacy
‘Ekta Daak Aasa Darkar’: Docu revisits the many worlds of broadcaster Pankaj Saha
Kolkata: Creating a documentary about a multifaceted talent poses significant challenges, particularly in balancing essential information with audience engagement. Dibyendu Porel's 88-minute docufilm 'Ekta Daak Aasa Darkar', recently shown at Nandan and hosted by the Forum for Film Studies and the Allied Arts, beautifully delves into the life, poetry, philosophy, and legacy of poet and broadcaster Pankaj Saha. Unlike traditional talking-head projects, this documentary skillfully avoids pigeonholing Saha as solely a television personality. Instead, it intricately intertwines his poetry and stories from associates like Pabitra Sarkar, Bibhas Chakraborty, Samik Bandyopadhyay, Shankarlal Bhattacharya, Chiranjeet Chakraborty, Madhabi Mukhopadhyay, Purnadas Baul, and Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta, presenting a nuanced portrayal of Saha's life. The film commences with his birth in undivided Bengal, progressing through his days at Jadavpur University before his involvement with All India Radio. It highlights Saha's founding of the Institute of Audio Visual Culture to promote recitation, his iconic Doordarshan programs such as 'Darshaker Darabare', 'Sahitya Sanskriti', and 'Tarunder Janya', his time in Bangladesh during 1971, and his stint at the BBC. The reminiscences become particularly captivating when Shankarlal Bhattacharya dissects the 'layakari' in Saha's delivery, and Chaitali Dasgupta recounts how he emphasized linguistic nuances by framing a documentary "about a person" rather than "on a person". Ramkumar Mukhopadhyay explores the internationalism in Saha's poetry, while Samik Bandopadhyay discusses his fusion of technology and aesthetics to connect with the audience effectively. A particularly intriguing segment includes a brief clip of poet Shankha Ghosh recalling how Saha once gifted him a small microphone from London, which became pivotal in Ghosh's life from 1985 to 1992, allowing him to continue lecturing despite vocal challenges. Porel meticulously composed the shots of the interviewees to prevent the film from becoming a mundane collection of quotes. "It is crucial to consider the aesthetics of filming as much as refining the content of the quotes," Porel remarked.
