Stay Safe on Wet Roads in the UAE: Essential Car Care and Driving Tips

Rain in the UAE can turn routine drives into hazardous journeys in minutes. Sudden downpours, slippery highways, and flash floods often catch drivers off guard, creating dangerous conditions even for experienced motorists. Following recent rainfall, Dubai Police advised drivers to reduce speed, remain alert, and avoid waterlogged streets. With the National Centre of Meteorology predicting more unstable weather as the region transitions from summer to winter, taking precautionary steps is crucial for safe driving and vehicle protection.

Tyres, Traction, and Driving Techniques

Tyres are the only point of contact between your car and the road, making their condition critical in wet weather. Ensure tread depth stays above 3mm, as worn tyres increase the risk of hydroplaning, where water lifts the tyre off the road, causing sudden loss of steering, braking, and control. Check tyre pressure regularly—underinflated tyres reduce water clearance, while overinflated tyres reduce grip. Switching to all-season or wet-weather tyres with deeper grooves can significantly improve traction in rainy conditions.

Modern safety technologies such as ABS, traction control, and stability systems assist in maintaining control but cannot replace careful driving. Apply steady brake pressure and avoid pumping the brakes, which can interfere with ABS performance. If your car hydroplanes, gently lift off the accelerator, keep the steering straight, and wait for traction to return. Increasing your following distance and making smooth steering adjustments help prevent accidents. Also, ensure brake pads are in good condition, as worn pads combined with wet discs can extend stopping distances.

Visibility Considerations

Heavy rain often reduces visibility, so maintaining wiper blades is essential. Replace them every six to eight months, particularly in the UAE’s hot climate, which can harden the rubber. Rain-repellent treatments on windshields and mirrors help water bead and roll off, while keeping washer fluid full is crucial for clearing mud and dirt. Use low-beam headlights instead of high beams to avoid glare, and clean headlights and taillights regularly to maintain brightness. Inside the cabin, use air conditioning or defog modes to manage fogging.

Engine Protection and Flood Awareness

Flooded roads are among the most dangerous hazards after rain. Avoid driving through water deeper than half the tyre height, as even SUVs can be affected. Cross shallow puddles slowly and steadily to reduce the risk of water entering the engine intake or exhaust, and lightly apply brakes afterward to dry the discs. If the engine stalls in water, do not attempt to restart it—towing is safer and helps prevent severe engine damage or insurance complications.

Cabin Care and Post-Rain Maintenance

Water can seep into the cabin through door or window seals, causing corrosion or mould. Remove wet mats immediately and use moisture absorbers to lower humidity. For luxury or EV owners, check electronics for damp exposure, as water ingress can result in expensive repairs. After the rain, inspect your vehicle’s underbody, rinse off mud and debris, test brakes at low speeds, and ensure EV charging ports remain dry to prevent long-term issues.

Although rain in the UAE can be sporadic, proper preparation and cautious driving make wet-road conditions manageable. Respect the elements, understand your vehicle’s limits, and let safety technologies assist your driving. Spending a few minutes on preventive care before and after storms can save repair costs and, more importantly, keep drivers and passengers safe.
