Apple Evaluating Tandem OLED Technology for Future iPhones
Apple is reportedly evaluating tandem OLED technology for the iPhone, potentially bringing the superior display technology currently exclusive to its iPad Pro lineup to smartphones by 2028.
Given Apple's typical two-year development cycle for display technologies, The Elec suggests iPhones with tandem OLED won't arrive until 2028 at the earliest. This timeline points to the iPhone 18 models, which are expected to launch in 2028, as the likely candidates for this display upgrade.
According to The Elec, Apple is considering a "simplified tandem" approach for the 2028âs iPhone models that would stack two layers only for blue subpixels while keeping red and green elements in a single layer. This streamlined implementation differs from the full tandem OLED technology used in the M4 iPad Pro, which features completely stacked RGB layers.
The company will likely rely on multiple suppliers to ensure adequate production capacity and competitive pricing. Apple is currently in discussions with both LG Display and Samsung Display about producing these advanced panels for future iPhone 18 devices. LG Display reportedly proposed the simplified tandem design to Apple in 2024, leveraging its expertise in automotive OLED manufacturing where it already employs two-stack methods. BOE is also reported to be in the mix.
The simplified tandem approach for the iPhone 18 represents Apple's way of getting better displays without making them too expensive to produce. Today's iPhones use basic OLED screens where all the colour dots â red, green, and blue â sit in a single layer. Apple's proposed upgrade would add an extra layer only for the blue dots, which tend to wear out faster than the other colors.
This upgrade could bring many advantages of premium display technology to the iPhone 18. Users would get brighter screens that use less battery power and last longer over time, all while keeping the phone affordable to manufacture.
